Dixons Carphone gives teenagers an insight into working life

What is your business doing to inspire the next generation?

At BNP Paribas Personal Finance UK, they take a hands-on approach when giving back to their local community, and our partnership with them has enabled us deliver our successful programme, including Career Taster Days, across the Midlands; which is something we’re very proud of.

In March, Dixons Carphone invited 11 young people from the MAPLE Alternative Provision in Newark to the company’s national distribution centre, where they had the opportunity to take part in a series of activities designed to get them thinking of the variety of roles within the business.

It was important to Dixons Carphone that they had the opportunity to engage directly with the young people, and the taster day gave the teens the chance to interact with Dixons Carphone employees, allowing them to ask questions and learn about their day-to-day work life.

The team engaged the students with a series of interactive tasks reflecting different parts of the supply chain, products and job roles, which all played upon the young people’s interest in technology.

A QR code task allowed the students to learn facts about the business, which they were later tested on in a fun summary quiz. A VR roller coaster which was a creative way to show the students some of the company’s specialist equipment, was listed as a highlight by many in attendance.

Luke Brookes, one of our East Midlands Regional Coach and Employability Lead for the region, said: “The practical hands-on sessions offered by Dixons Carphone really engaged the young people, and all of the students who took part left talking about how much they enjoyed the day, with some even expressing an interest in applying for an apprenticeship within the company.”

Phillip Knowles, head of operations at Dixons Carphone adds: “We’re always on the lookout for young talent and this career taster day was a great way to showcase the company to real young people in the local area who could actually come and work for us in the future.”

Hosting a Career Taster Day is a great way to bring your company’s values to life, while encouraging young people to reach higher than they ever thought they could.
